Introduction
China’s vast internal migration – more than 260 million people who left home in search of work – is a story of hope but also of endurance and difficult reality. While for many, the move has brought improved financial situation and opportunities, it also came at a price of significant hardship to the workers and their families. This report investigated the current situation of migrant workers parents. Through the analysis of the challenges of migrant worker parents, the impact of strained relationships on their work, wellbeing, and career decision-making, the report was to highlight the issue of China’s 61 million left behind children from the perspective of their working parents. For enterprises, all the issues concern their workforce stability, production efficiency or the final profit margins. Taking into consideration the needs of migrant families and helping leverage community and government resources, enterprises can play a leading role in social service innovation and exert profound influence on the lives of millions of migrant workers.
The study was carried out in 2013 by the Center for Child Rights and Corporate Social Responsibility (CCR CSR) and the Facilitator, and supported by the CSR Centre of the Embassy of Sweden.
