It is essential to attain high-quality development and promote the harmonious coexistence between people and nature to achieve Chinese modernization. The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China emphasizes the need to enhance the fundamental role of consumption in economic development. Accelerating sustainable consumption is not only necessary for high-quality economic development, but also an inherent requirement for achieving the harmonious coexistence between people and nature. And it is also highly consistent with consumers’ needs for a better life and common prosperity. At the same time, new forms of consumption characterized as green and sustainable are stimulating new industries and business models, thus have unleashed consumption potential, promoted consumption upgrade and development.
As an important platform for displaying and trading global consumer goods, China International Consumer Products Expo (CICPE) continues to embrace sustainability. Upholding the concept of “green exhibition”, the first CICPE had provided a platform for spreading the concept of green consumption and displaying green products at home and abroad in 2021. The first Sustainable Consumption Forum held at the CICPE with the theme of “sustainable consumption for the future”. Similarly, China Sustainability Tribune, together with other domestic and foreign brands, have officially launched the “Global Sustainable Consumption Initiative”, calling on enterprises and organizations to join hands with stakeholders to promote sustainable consumption and embrace a better life, which has gained attention from major media.
In the second CICPE of 2022, the Sustainable Consumption Forum was elevated to be the official forum of the CICPE. With 500 participants, it promotes “Sustainable Consumption: Driving a Low-Carbon Future”, and has made its influence and exposure to the next level. At the Forum, the Global Sustainable Consumption Initiative, with “1+N” principle of openness, welcomed new members. “Sustainable Consumption Experience Space” in the exhibition, the first of its kind to be set up in a national exhibition, gained popularity within media and visitors, as it made sustainable consumption visible, audible and experiential.
The 3rd Sustainable Consumption Forum comes with great promise
Vibrant consumer market in this year’s Spring Festival made a good start for China’s economic recovery. The Ministry of Commerce has defined 2023 as the “year to boost consumption”. China’s consumer market keeps rebounding and consumption needs are satisfied intensively, which, as experts pointed out, demonstrates that China’s consumer market remains resilient and full of potential and that China’s positive economic fundamentals and long-term trajectory remain unchanged. Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and other places have launched a variety of activities for consumers, of which how to unleash the potential of green consumption has become an important part. The new consumption boom of green and sustainable consumption is riding the wind and cleaving the waves.
In this context, the third CICPE “Sustainable Consumption Forum” deserves even more expectation.
In an article published in the Qiushi Journal, President Xi Jinping addressed the priority of the recovery and expansion of consumption, to enhance consumption capacity, improve consumption conditions, and innovate consumption scenarios so that consumption potential can be fully released. Therefore, themed as "Create New Consumption Scenarios, Unleash Consumption Potential", the 2023 Sustainable Consumption Forum will discuss the new trends, policies and practices of green and sustainable consumption in China with topics such as “sustainable development to promote new consumption”, “carbon inclusion to lead green consumption”, “sustainable brands” and “ESG values”, etc.
To give full play to the advantages of the CICPE platform and exhibitors, there will be a “Ticking off the 'sustainable forum' and hunting for treasure at the CICPE” activity in the third Sustainable Consumption Forum, as a way to deepen the understanding of “sustainable consumption” and enhance the communication and interaction between exhibitors and consumers. The activity integrates events such as museum tour, science popularization and stamp collection, where the “passport” handed out to participants presents brands, booths and exhibits with green and sustainable features. The passport conveys sustainable consumption values to consumers, while catering to new generation consumers who are environmentally conscious, advocators of sustainability, and keen to entertain themselves and share their experiences online.
