China CSR Corporation Limited: Leading the development of high speed rail in China

2015-09-08Sino-Swedish Corporate Socialadmin0010

Challenge
With the rapid growth of China's economy, the construction of railway infrastructures has left behind and failed to meet the demand of transportation, resulting in the limited carrying capacity of railways. The safe and reliable high-speed railway is well-known for its speed and comfort, high carrying capacity and low carbon emission. High speed railway has become an important trend in the world's railway development. However, we have unique national circumstances and line conditions. The difference in railway transit system, line conditions and natural and geographical environment has decided that we cannot copy foreign technologies. As the key manufacturer of rail transport equipment in China, CSR has the responsibility for providing safe and reliable products for the development of high-speed railway.
Solution
Greater efforts in independent innovation
Based on its projects, CSR has fully integrated external technological resources and established an innovation alliance through the combination of the industry, education, research and application. One good example is the government-led and market-oriented CRH380A, the new generation of high-speed EMU, which is jointly developed by CSR in association with more than 50 companies and over 30 research institutes and universities. Nearly 60 academicians, 500 professors and ten thousand research personnel poured their painstaking effort into it.
Relying on four national research institutions including the National Engineering Laboratory for Integrated High-speed Train System and the National Engineering Technology Center for High-speed EMU Assembly, CSR, as the main sponsor, established China High-speed Train Industry Technology Innovation Alliance in 2012 through the integration of innovative resources in domestic research institutes. In the meanwhile, it signed a technological cooperation agreement with the Chinese Academy of Engineering to further improve its open technological innovation system.
More robust industry system
While focusing on technological breakthrough and giving priority to combining the construction of simulation platform and experimental study of lines, CSR has established a robust R & D system featured with complete system, structure and resources. The company has invested more than 2 billion yuan for large-scale industrial transformation, constructing a manufacturing technology system with information, digital and automation as the focus, and building a professional and large-size high-speed train industrial base in China.
Achievements
By the end of 2012, 459 short and long high-speed trains (equivalent to 621 standard high-speed trains) had been delivered at China CSR, accounting for 57.4% in the total amount of high-speed trains across China. Above all, the mileage of CRH high-speed trains, launched by CSR in 2012, reached 240 million kilometers and its contribution to the development of railway exceeded 55%. High speed train has effectively relieved the pressure on railway transportation and catered to the requirements of low-carbon economic development in China.
Stronger capability of independent innovation
CSR has built high-speed trains product technology platforms in different speed grades and formed experimental verification system for them. It has possessed ten core technologies. According to incomplete statistics, CSR has received more than 400 patents for its high-speed high-speed trains and developed more than 100 standards. In 2012, CSR created a speed of 605 km per hour in its experiment, which marks that China has achieved significant results in the prospective study of bullet trains.
Faster interflow of production factors
The opening of high-speed train has effectively integrated the transport capacity. It has not only released the carrying capacity of existing railway, but also mitigated the sharp contradiction between the carry capacity and the traffic volume. Above all, it has accelerated the interflow of population, commodities, funds, information and other production factors. In 2012, Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway went into operation as the world’s longest one, reducing travelling time to 8 hours and bringing great convenience to the business trip and regular visits of people along the line.
Faster industry development
CRH380A high-speed train is comprised of more than 40,000 parts and over 90% of them are produced in more than 150 companies in 19 provinces of China. In Zhuzhou of Hunan province, several companies have created a number of “China First” and “World First” in the development of rail transit products, which has accelerated the development of new type industrialization in Zhuzhou. In the future, it will create a rail transit industry cluster worth hundreds of billions yuan in Hunan province and this will greatly boost the development of over 20 industrial clusters related to rail transit, including machinery processing, electronics and others in the surrounding areas.
Prospect
The high-speed train is one of national strategic emerging industries. China CSR will shoulder its responsibility in the revitalization of the national industry. For this purpose, it will demonstrate its sustainability in the mode of transport and enhance its capability of independent innovation. In the meanwhile, it will enhance its competitiveness in the entire industry chain and quicken its paces as a world-class enterprise with international competitiveness.
