Challenge
According to the statistics from the Department of Agriculture, the comprehensive utilization of crop straw is quite low in China. Most of them has been burned as waste and this has caused serious air pollution. Presently, only a small proportion of paper is made of the other non-wood fiber   in the world with lower percentage of crop straw paper. The primary cause of this situation is that the technology of pulped wood paper is much more mature than that of straw paper. The latter may cause serious contamination because of its chemical pulping process. With the tendency to phase out non-wood fiber and upgrade the structure of paper industry in China, YFY has no choice but to create green paper industry to enhance its competitiveness.
Solution
In September, 2013, the world’s first bio-pulping production line was put into operation in Yuen Foong Yu (Yangzhou) Plant. All of material on the production line is made from crop straw with Yuen Foong Yu’s Natural pulp (Npulp) technology, a green paper-making technology that the company has researched and developed for more than ten years.
This bio-pulping technology overcomes the shortcomings of traditional chemical pulping. On the one hand, it uses waste crop straw as main raw materials and enables the comprehensive utilization of crop straw resources. On the other hand, it has shortened the time of crop straw decomposition. At present, this technology has been put into mass production of paper products.
Achievements
YFY has made good use of waste crop straw with its bio-pulping technology. This has not only solved the pressing problem of farmers, but also avoided environmental pollution caused by burning straw. YFY will lead China’s paper industry to move towards the target of “zero emission and low pollution”.
 
Prospect
YFY promotes the straw pulping and paper-making industry, which suits the trends that China is pushing forward the straw stalk comprehensive utilization and trying to realize the “agriculture-pulping-paper-fertilizer” integrated chain. in the future, YFY will enhance the cooperation with famers, provide technology and fiancé support for them, and encourage rural cooperation organizations to lead straw recycle and processing. Also, YFY will support the local counterparts to apply the Npulp technology and work together to reduce the use of pure wood pulp and reduce deforestation.
