Challenge
In the coal industry, the traditional coal mining model, featuring in “heavy waste and energy consumption as well as serious pollution”, is a pressing challenge for numerous coal enterprises. Pingshuo Mining Area of ChinaCoal Pingshuo Group thrives on opencast mining. Therefore, it is bound to damage the original earth’s surface and ecology. In addition, the vulnerable original ecology and backward agricultural development pattern exert an impact on the recycle of reclaimed land and interests of land-lost farmers. It is a challenge for ChinaCoal Pingshuo Group to achieve the ambitious goal of land reclamation and ecological recovery on the basis of win-win solution of government, enterprise and farmers.

Solution
ChinaCoal Pingshuo Group regards building a natural, ecological, modern and harmonious mining area as its duty, adheres to the principle of “make the ecological  development industrialized and industrial development ecological” and proactively carries out the governance of ecological environment in mining area according to the “green, environmental protection and low carbon” philosophy. Currently a green ecocycle industrial demonstration base has taken shape with its combination of reclamation, afforestation, ecology, industry and development. Through over 20 years of efforts, ChinaCoal Pingshuo Group has achieved the transformation from ecological reclamation to ecocycle industry by attaching importance to strategy, realizing the industry-university-research cooperation, reclaiming the land, developing agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and medicine industry, achieving the comprehensive utilization of resources, and establishing an ecotourism park.

Achievements
In terms of social benefits, ChinaCoal Pingshuo Group has yielded tremendous achievements, for it has improved the ecological system, enhanced its corporate image, promoted farmers’ employment and increased their income. In terms of economic benefits, the land has appreciated and has been exempt from overhead charge: every year ChinaCoal Pingshuo Group is exempt from overhead charge for water and soil conservation as well as compensation fee for water loss and soil erosion. In addition, charge for waste rock is used for land reclamation and power generation. In terms of industrial economic value, black locusts and moth orchids are planted in the mining area. ChinaCoal Pingshuo Group has yielded great sales earnings in this respect.

Prospect
During the 12^th Five-Year Plan period, Pingshuo has developed 15 key projects, including the following 4 categories: ecological protection, eco-agricultural planting, agricultural and animal husbandry products processing and agricultural tourism. By 2020, Pingshuo Mining Area will have developed a land reclamation demonstration base as well as a high-efficiency agriculture demonstration base for Ministry of Land and Resources of the People’s Republic of China so as to build ecocycle agriculture in its true sense and achieve sustainable development of the mining area.
